Nature’s Bounty Evening Primrose Oil Review
Nature’s Bounty is a well-known supplement brand and therefore we were excited to investigate their formulation of an Evening Primrose Oil product. There are two versions of this popular supplement that this manufacturer sells which are the 500mg and the 1000mg softgels. While the 500mg capsule may be more enticing to consumers due to its lower price tag, the efficacy deemed it unworthy in our eyes. Instead, we will focus on reviewing Nature’s Bounty Evening Primrose Oil 1000mg.
Nature’s Bounty Evening Primrose Oil claims to promote women’s health. It also states that it is standardized to 90mg GLA. Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is responsible for the health benefits associated with Evening Primrose Oil. While 90mg of GLA is a good start, that means this product is only standardized to 9% GLA instead of 10% which is the maximum amount possible. So for a product containing 1000mg of Evening Primrose Oil, we would have expected to see 100mg of GLA.
When it comes to supplements that contain only one ingredient, quality is essential. To that end, we were glad to see that this product is free of gelatin and vegetable glycerin. It is also non-GMO, has no artificial color, artificial flavor, artificial sweetener, preservatives, sugar, starch, milk, lactose, soy, gluten, wheat, yeast, fish or sodium.
We were happy to see that this product is manufactured in the USA and has a GMP certification but it’s ultimately the formula that gets you the results, so does this product have what it takes?
Is Nature’s Bounty Evening Primrose Oil Effective?
In order to discern whether or not this supplement is effective, we must look at the amount of Evening Primrose Oil found in each serving. In the case of Nature’s Bounty Evening Primrose Oil, a daily serving is 1 softgel which equals 1000 mg of Evening Primrose Oil. While this is more than some products we have reviewed, it is actually significantly less than some others. Thus, the quantity of this Evening Primrose Oil is slightly disappointing.
This product is prepared using a cold-pressed extraction for the purest Evening Primrose Oil possible. This is positive as using different extractions methods will lead to impure products that are diluted and weaker.
Is Nature’s Bounty Evening Primrose Oil Safe?
This product is marketed as natural and safe. There are no mentioned side effects.
As a general rule, it is always recommended to speak to your doctor before taking any new supplement, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, have any health conditions or are taking other medications.
Summary
Nature’s Bounty Evening Primrose Oil has the right idea by formulating their product with cold-pressed Evening Primrose Oil to help promote women’s health. We were glad to see that Nature’s Bounty has a strong dose of Evening Primrose Oil of 1000mg per serving. However, this is lower than some of the products we have reviewed. Additionally, this product is standardized to 9% GLA for 90mg per serving. This is close to the maximum standardization but just short of our Editor’s Choice #1 product.
This is a reputable company which is certified according to Good Manufacturing Practices which is why it is in this spot. However, some customer reviews complained of old bottles being delivered and capsules that were stuck together and smelled rancid.
Finally, this product cannot be purchased on the manufacturer’s website. Consumers are directed either to Amazon or to find a brick-and-mortar location at which to buy this product. Unfortunately, the return policy is quite vague. While there seems to be one in place, it is unclear how long it lasts and it is only applicable for unused capsules.
